What to Wear for Stunning Engagement Photos in Washington & Across the PNW
Because your love deserves engagement photos that feel as wild, moody, and unforgettable as Washington itself.
Photographs by Sea to Summit Photography
As a Washington engagement + elopement photographer, I’ve photographed couples ankle‑deep in Puget Sound tide pools, twirling through Mt. Rainier wildflower meadows, wrapped in Pendleton blankets on an Olympic Coast bluff, and dressed to the nines on a Seattle rooftop at sunset. One thing I’ve learned? What you wear matters—not in a fussy, fashion‑magazine way, but in a comfort, confidence, and "this actually works in Washington weather" kind of way.
This guide is written specifically for couples planning engagement photos in Washington State—whether you’re dreaming of alpine views, mossy forests, ferry rides, or Pike Place romance. I’ll walk you through colors that pop against our evergreens, smart layering for unpredictable weather, what’s best to wear for engagement photos in Washington. Let’s keep it relaxed, and true to you—while making sure your outfits photograph beautifully in whatever the Cascades decide to throw at us that day.
Why What You Wear for Engagement Photos Matters
Your engagement session is the prologue to your wedding story — the images on your save‑the‑dates, wedding site, and framed on your wall for years. Outfits play a huge role in setting the tone. The right clothing can:
Boost confidence so you relax and connect.
Complement your location so you, not the outfit, are the focus.
Add movement and texture for photos that feel alive.
Tell a story — does it tell a story about what you two enjoy doing?
Season-by-Season Guide: What to Wear for Engagement Photos in Washington
Washington seasons aren’t tidy. Elevation, region, and season matter. Here’s how I recommend planning by both calendar and location.
Winter (Dec–Mar at lower elevations; alpine snow Nov–June)
Cozy layers: wool coats, chunky scarves/shawls, lined tights under dresses. I’ll bring extra hand warmers for all of us!
Jewel tones photograph beautifully against snow or gray skies to not feel so washed out with the background.
Waterproof boots/boots with traction > cute suede when there’s slush, mud, or uneven terrain. Lots of hiking shoes are made with GoreTex and are very stylish!
Spring (March–May Westside; May–June mountains start to open)
Fresh greens + blooms: pastels, soft florals, light knits.
Expect rain. Bring a clear umbrella (it lets light through and still looks great).
Chilly shade in forests—pack a warmer layer than you think.
Summer (June–Sept; peak alpine July–Aug)
Flowy dresses, breathable linens, rolled sleeves. Depending on where you want your adventure takes you, consider some shoes with traction (more on that below)
Sun protection via sunscreen and/or long UV protecting clothing!
Evening mosquitoes in meadows—bring lightweight pants and bug spray.
Fall (Sept–Nov; Larch madness late Sept–mid Oct in the North Cascades)
Rich, warm palettes: mustard, rust, wine, copper.
Layered textures: flannel + knit + wool brimmed hat.
Mornings are cold; afternoons warm. Peel-able layers are key. Consider bringing a blanket to bundle up in too.
Color Schemes that Pop Against Washington Backdrops
Washington is a land of contrasts: emerald forests, moody beaches, golden meadows, and snowy peaks. Choosing colors that complement these natural tones can make your photos truly stunning.
Pacific Northwest Coast (E.g Olympic Peninsula, Ruby Beach): Choose earth tones like sage green, cream, and muted blues blend perfectly with rocky beaches and driftwood. Add texture with knits or linen.
Cascade Mountains (E.g Snoqualmie Pass, Mount Rainier): Choose jewel tones—deep emerald, burgundy, and navy—pop against the alpine greens and snowy peaks.
Urban Vibes (E.g Seattle Waterfront, Pike Place Market): Choose neutral outfits paired with a bold pop of color (like mustard or rust) look amazing against city architecture and gray skies.
What Happens If It Rains?
Welcome to the PNW — rain is part of the adventure! I (with some few exceptions) will be photographing you two rain or shine! Here’s how to make it work:
Bring a clear or cute umbrella. I promise those backlit raindrops will produce dreamy engagement photos.
Layer smart.Waterproof outer shell over your planned look keeps you cozy between shots. Consider again bringing some of those precious hand warmers and tuck them in your pockets.
Choose fabrics that handle moisture well. Wool blends, knits, and quick-dry layers win over stiff cotton.
Hair plan. Loose waves or styles that embrace texture work better than super sleek.
Lean in! Some of the most romantic, cinematic shots happen in the rain.
You + your partner + a moody backdrop = magic.
Coordinating Without Matching
Instead of wearing the exact same color, pick a color palette. For example, if one partner wears a navy sweater, the other can go for cream or soft blush. This creates harmony without feeling too “matchy-matchy.” Consider textures, too—pair denim with chiffon or wool with silk for visual depth.
Footwear & Mobility (We Move A Lot)
My Recommended Footwear Strategy:
Trail / approach shoe or boot for getting to the spot if we’re going to hike for your engagement photos.
Photo shoe (cute boot, low heel, barefoot sandal) to swap in once we’re at the location for your photoshoot. Hiking boots do look amazing in photoshoots though!
Socks + extras: Wet feet ruin vibes; toss a dry pair in your bag if rain is in the forecast.
If you love heels for urban shots, awesome—bring them in a tote, wear sneakers until we start shooting.
Accessories To Consider for your Engagement Photos
Accessories complete the look and help with weather.
Blankets: Pendleton, wool camp blankets, or neutral throws add cuddle energy, warmth, and color blocks.
Hats: Wide‑brim felt for fall; knit beanies for alpine chill; baseball cap to keep the sun off your eyes.
Scarves & wraps: Helps add texture, movement, and can provide warmth.
Clear umbrella: Must‑have insurance in spring / fall; lets in light and stays timeless.
Bouquet or foraged greens: Simple hand‑tied bundle adds romance in forest settings.
Backpacks: If we hike, choose a minimal, neutral pack—yes, it may be in a few candids.
Final Tip For Your Engagement Photos: Plan for Adventure!
Washington offers endless variety of dreamy locations for your engagement photos. Your engagement session is a chance to celebrate your love and your personality. Whether you’re sipping coffee at Pike Place or twirling on a mountaintop, wear something that feels like you. The confidence and joy will shine through every frame, I promise.
