About this Stunning Lake Powell Elopement

Lake Powell is an incredible location if you’re considering eloping in Arizona or Utah. The view of the valley and the lake is like no other. A & D shared a beautiful sunrise elopement here in Lake Powell.

We met well before sunrise at their Airbnb where we drove an hour and a half down a dirt and boulder road to get to the edge of Lake Powell for sunrise. This needed a 4×4 for sure!

They then walked and explored around the edge, overlooking at Lake Powell below. Later, we drove back down to a slot canyon where we walked about a mile into canyon for ceremony and more photos.

Afterwards, we hopped back in the car and got some driving away photos in their Bronco. We ended the day driving back to the Airbnb where we had lunch. It was such a fun day!

Best Time of Year to Have a Lake Powell Elopement

Lake Powell is one of those rare places that feels completely different depending on when you visit—so choosing the right season can shape your entire elopement experience.

For most couples, the best time to elope in Lake Powell is the spring (April–May) and fall (September–October). During these months, temperatures are warm but not overwhelming, making it comfortable to explore the shoreline, hike through sandstone canyons, and actually enjoy your ceremony without battling extreme heat. These seasons also bring fewer crowds.

  • Spring has a softer, quieter feel. The desert starts to wake up, temperatures stay mild, and the lake is noticeably less busy. It’s a great option if you want a peaceful, slow-paced experience with more flexibility in locations and logistics.

  • Fall, on the other hand, offers a really nice balance—warm water, cooler air, and fewer people. You still get that golden desert glow, but without the intensity of summer heat. For couples who want to swim, boat, or explore the lake after their ceremony, early fall is one of the most versatile times to elope here.

  • Summer (June–August) is peak season, and while it brings long days and warm water, it also comes with extreme heat—often reaching 90–100°F+. If you’re set on summer, I recommend planning a sunrise or sunset elopement to beat the heat.

  • Winter is the most underrated season. It’s quiet, moody, and incredibly intimate—but also much cooler. You will get solitude and a completely different kind of desert beauty.

Lake Powell Elopement Permit Requirements & How to Apply

If you’re planning to elope at Lake Powell, you’ll need a Special Use Permit through Glen Canyon National Recreation Area—it’s not optional, even for small ceremonies.

Here’s how it works:

1. Apply for a Special Use Permit

All weddings and elopements at Lake Powell require a permit issued by the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. This applies whether it’s just the two of you or a small group. The link to the application is here.

Permit fee: Around $300

Application timeline: At least 45 days in advance (earlier is always better)

2. Submit Your Application

You’ll fill out a permit application through the National Park Service (NPS). This includes:

  1. Your ceremony location (or general area)

  2. Number of guests

  3. Whether you’ll have vendors (like a photographer such as myself, officiant, etc.)

3. Follow Location & Group Restrictions

Lake Powell is massive, but that doesn’t mean every spot is open for ceremonies. Some areas have restrictions to protect the landscape and visitor experience.

4. Get Your Marriage License

Your permit allows you to have the ceremony—but you’ll still need a legal marriage license from either Utah or Arizona, depending on where you plan to officially marry!
