Why Choose Mount Baker for Your Wedding

Mount Baker isn’t just a mountain on the north end of Washington, it’s one of Washington’s most beloved peaks (second to of course Mount Rainier). Towering over the North Cascades and surrounded by acres of wilderness, this area brings a sense of escape and intentionality. Having your wedding in Mount Baker is for couples who want a day that feels personal and meaningful.

Unlike the North Cascades National Park, one of the perks of Mount Baker is that much of the region sits within the national forest rather than strict national park boundaries. That means fewer restrictions around ceremonies, pets, easier permitting process, and greater flexibility on places to elope.

Whether you’re dreaming of an doing an adventurous hiking elopement in the mountains or an intimate wedding ceremony with your loved ones over looking the North Cascades, Mount Baker gives you the freedom to create a wedding day that truly reflects your story.

Best Times of Year for a Get Married in Mount Baker

Mount Baker is stunning year-round, but there are several factors to consider when choosing to get married here.

Spring (April–June):
—As ski season ends, the snow will start to melt in April and bring out some green back into the landscape. However, the road leading up to Artist Point, Picture Lake and other hikes will be closed until late June/early July.

—If you’re down for an adventure, snowshoes, microspikes and some trekking poles will get us to the top. Do keep in mind that this hike from the closure of the road is steep to say the least but the reward will be having the whole place to yourselves.

Summer (July–September):
—July through September is the best time to have your wedding in Mount Baker as the roads will be open, the snow levels will be manageable with extra traction in July, and the weather will be much more predictable!

—Keep in mind crowd levels will be higher, so consider eloping/getting married during the weekday to avoid those crowds!

Fall (Late September–November):
—Late September to early October is when the magic starts to happen in Mount Baker. If you time it right, you can have your wedding surrounded by golden larches, and all of the fall colors.

—One of the perks (outside of Larch Madness) it that the mountain is much quieter, with less crowds. Do keep in mind that fall brings more unpredictable weather though!

—Do keep in mind that the road leading up to Artist Point closes around early to mid October, so having back up locations around the Mount Baker area to get married in is recommended if you had your heart set on any locations above those gates.

Winter (December–March):
—For couples seeking a snow-filled adventure, winter delivers. Mount Baker receives 600+ inches of snow in some areas, creating an epic winter wonderland for vows.

—As mentioned earlier, you can hike up to Artist Point and may break a bit of sweat but its a great place to even camp for your elopement/wedding once you get there and makes for stunning wedding photos.

—Alternatively, you can even hit the slopes at Mt Baker ski area and ski during your wedding for a more unique way to tie the knot.

Mount Baker Elopement and Wedding Locations

Choosing a venue around Mount Baker means celebrating the landscape as much as the ceremony itself.

1.) Artist Point, Heather Meadows & Picture Lake: Both offer breathtaking views. Artist Point has panoramic views of Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan, while Heather Meadows is slightly more accessible — ideal for family-inclusive weddings. For an even more accessible location, Picture Lake is a great place to go to as well with a paved loop around the lake.

2.) Baker Lake: Baker Lake is full of beautiful areas to elope in but does require a little bit of hiking to get some beautiful views of Mount Baker for your wedding. One of the perks of getting married at Baker Lake is the option to launch a kayak, canoe, or even go paddleboarding for an added adventure.

3.) Other Epic Locations: There are many fire-lookout towers in this area, and even hot springs to get married in that are around Mount Baker. Hiking will have to be involved, however if you get to the fire-lookout tower early enough then you can even sleep there!

Other Wedding Venues Around Mount Baker

If you’re looking for a more formal wedding venue that can include a larger guest party and have some of the accommodations of a wedding venue, here are some Mount Baker wedding venues to consider:

1. Wandering WatersWandering Waters is a super flexible, outdoorsy venue that has tall, moss covered trees and evergreens as well as open fields. This wedding venue is perfect for couples who want the magic of an outdoor wedding venue.

2. 3 C’s Farm - Located in Deming, WA this wedding venue has a more rustic feel. They have some unique elements such as a bridal cottage and a cool bar set up. This larger wedding venue accommodates up to 300 guests which is great for a larger wedding.

3. Camp Saturna - This event space is literally what the name implies: its a camp! This camp has a beautiful outdoor chapel that is filled with moss and trees and can accommodate 100 guests. You also get the main lodge and even the bunkhouses where over 40 of your guests can stay here.

If you and your partner loved going to camps and retreats growing up, then this wedding venue is for you!

Where to Stay for Your Mount Baker Wedding

There are many places to stay near Mount Baker for your wedding or elopement. One of my recommendations is to try to stay within an hour drive of your wedding location to not feel like you are spending a big part of your wedding driving.

  1. AirBnB - there are so many unique places to stay around Mount Baker. Choose a radius that starts around Maple Falls and runs along the Route 542. Some spots are nestled in the forest or have their own private creek. If you’re looking for recommendations, ask away!

  2. Camping! There are lots of camping spots throughout Route 542 leading towards Mount Baker. My Favorite is Silver Fir Campground but Douglas Fir Campground is another excellent location to camp before your wedding.

Getting Mount Baker Wedding Permits

Depending on what area you want to get married in Mount Baker, you may or may not need a special use permit for your wedding day. Regardless of permits, you can only have up to 12 guests at one time in the National Forest to safely be in the land without breaking any Leave No Trace rules.

As a photographer who applies for these permits all of the time, that is one thing I like to do for my couples so they don’t have to worry about the permitting process. One thing you will of course have to do on your own is applying for your marriage license for Washington! Take a peak at my guide on How to Get Married in Washington Guide to learn more.
