If you’re planning a wedding, micro wedding, or an elopement in Washington State and trying to figure out the best time of year to do it, you’re in the right place! Washington is genuinely one of the most beautiful states in the country to get married in but our weather is a little more complicated than most places.
In Washington, the “best” time to get married really depends on where you’re getting married and what kind of experience you’re after. In this guide I’m breaking down the best time to have a wedding in Washington State season by season, location by location, so you can make the most informed decision for your day!

Does Season Really Matter for a Washington Wedding?
The answer is it depends! A lot of couples assume Washington is either rainy and grey or warm and sunny, but it’s not that black and white. Washington is a huge, geographically diverse state, and the season that works beautifully for a mountain elopement in the North Cascades might be completely different from the best time for a rainforest ceremony in Olympic National Park or a rooftop wedding in downtown Seattle.
I always tell my couples that the best time to have a wedding in Washington is the season that matches the experience you want to have. Some of my absolute favorite weddings I’ve ever photographed have been in the middle of November with fog rolling through old-growth trees. Some have been on bluebird July days on a Cascade ridgeline with 50 miles of visibility. Both were perfect but were just different kinds of perfect.
Summer Weddings in Washington — June, July & August
Best for: Mountain venues, alpine lakes, high elevation ceremonies, wildflower meadows
Summer is the most popular time to get married in Washington, and for good reason. July and August in particular bring the highest chance of having a sunny day, the best mountain access, and those long golden hours that make for absolutely stunning photos.
What’s great about summer in Washington:
Mountain venues like Artist Point, Mt. Rainier, and Alpine Lakes are fully accessible
Wildflowers are at peak bloom in July
Long days mean more flexibility with your timeline
Dry weather is much more reliable, even in the Olympic Peninsula!
What to keep in mind:
Summer is peak season, which means popular trailheads and viewpoints can and WILL be crowded on weekends
Venues and photographers book up fast, so if you’re dreaming of a summer wedding, I recommend you inquire early
Heat can be a factor in July and August, and so are our friends the mosquitos

Fall Weddings in Washington — September & October
Best for: Forest elopements, rainforest ceremonies, alpine lakes with fall color, couples who love moody and atmospheric
Fall is honestly my personal favorite time to photograph weddings in Washington, and it’s a season I think is wildly underrated. September and October bring a totally different kind of magic.
What’s great about fall in Washington:
Significantly fewer crowds at popular locations (except for the Larch Madness!)
Fall foliage at places like Mount Rainier, the North Cascades, and the Columbia River Gorge is jaw-dropping
The light in September and October is some of the best of the entire year
Weather is still often dry and beautiful, especially in September
What to keep in mind:
October can bring rain and early snow at higher elevations especially towards the second half
Some mountain road access like Artist Point may close by mid-October depending on snowfall
Sunset comes earlier, which changes your timeline compared to summer

Winter Weddings in Washington — November through February
Best for: Rainforest ceremonies, lower elevation weddings, Seattle city weddings, cozy cabin vibes, couples who love dramatic moody weather
Winter weddings in Washington are genuinely magical and they are so, so under booked. If you want your wedding photos to stop people mid-scroll, a misty old-growth forest in November or a snow-covered mountain backdrop in January does that in a way that a clear summer day simply can’t.
What’s great about winter in Washington:
The Hoh Rainforest is at its most lush, green, and otherworldly in winter. If you’re into Twilight, this is the time to come!
Snow-capped mountains and frosted forests create a completely different and stunning aesthetic
Drastically fewer people at every location
Many venues and photographers have more availability
Seattle weddings are beautiful in winter
What to keep in mind:
Most high-elevation venues are inaccessible in winter due to snow so you’ll need to stick to lower elevation forests, coastlines, and city locations
Weather backup plans are non-negotiable
Days are short and golden hour comes early (often before 5pm!), so your timeline will look much different than a summer day

Spring Weddings in Washington — March, April & May
Best for: Wildflowers, waterfalls at full flow, lush green everything, couples who love fresh and vibrant
Spring is one of Washington’s most beautiful seasons and another one that I think is overlooked by a lot of couples. Everything is intensely green, waterfalls are absolutely roaring from snowmelt, and everything starts to come back to life and start blossoming.
What’s great about spring in Washington:
Waterfalls are at their most dramatic due to snowmelt
Wildflowers start blooming in the foothills and lowlands
The forests are an almost unreal shade of green
Crowds are still relatively low compared to summer
Temperatures are mild and comfortable for outdoor ceremonies but still have a chance of rain
What to keep in mind:
50/50 chance you’ll have a gorgeous day or a rainy one
Higher elevation venues are still inaccessible until late May or June. North Cascades area like Artist Point isn’t open until beginning of July
Mud can be a factor on all trails something. Embrace the muddy clothes!

Best Time to Get Married by Location
The season question really does depend on where you’re getting married. Here’s a quick breakdown:
Mt. Rainier National Park — Best: July through September. The wildflowers peak in mid-July and the mountain is most accessible in summer. Fall shoulder season in September is stunning and less crowded.
Olympic National Park & Hoh Rainforest — Best: Year-round! The Hoh is honestly one of the few locations that is arguably better in fall and winter when the rain brings the moss and ferns to life. Summer is more reliably dry but the rainforest is beautiful in any season.
North Cascades — Best: July through early October. The highway typically closes in winter, so plan for summer or early fall. Late September larches are a bucket list experience.
Seattle — Best: Year-round, though June through September brings the most reliable weather. Winter Seattle weddings have their own magic with the city lights and cozy energy.
Deception Pass State Park — Best: Year-round. One of the most versatile locations in Washington. Summer brings blue skies and sparkling water; fall and winter bring drama and atmosphere. I may be biased since this is where I eloped, but it’s genuinely stunning in every season.
Oregon Coast — Best: May through October. The coast can be stormy and unpredictable in winter, though honestly a dramatic stormy coast ceremony is its own kind of incredible.

What About Rain?
If you’re getting married in Washington, rain is a possibility in almost any season. And here’s what I always tell my couples: don’t be afraid of it! Some of the most beautiful and memorable weddings I’ve ever photographed happened in the rain.
My advice:
Always have a backup plan — a covered structure, an indoor option if the rain gets bad, or at minimum a collection of umbrellas that match your vibe
Embrace it — couples who lean into the weather always end up with the most memorable and unique photos.
Trust your photographer — a good Washington wedding photographer knows how to work with rain, overcast skies, and moody weather to create images that are genuinely stunning
Frequently Asked Questions About Washington Wedding Timing
What is the most popular month to get married in Washington?
July and August are the most popular months for weddings in Washington because of the reliable weather and full mountain access. September is a close second though because the crowds are lighter and the weather is still often beautiful.
Can you get married outside in Washington in the winter?
Absolutely! Lower elevation locations like the Hoh Rainforest, Deception Pass, the Oregon Coast, and Seattle are all totally viable for outdoor winter ceremonies. Some areas like Gold Creek Pond are only open in the winter and is a great winter elopement location. You just need the right layers, a weather backup plan, and an embrace-the-PNW attitude.
Is fall a good time for a Washington elopement?
Fall is one of the best times for a Washington elopement in my opinion especially September and early October. The light is warm and golden, crowds drop significantly.
What season has the best light for wedding photos in Washington?
Every season has its magic, but golden hour in September and October is particularly stunning. Summer gives you more hours of usable light. Winter and fall deliver that moody, Twilight vibes that looks incredible in the forests or on the coast.
